PROJECT Toorak Residence T9

Stylist Q & A

What was the client's brief to STUDIO?

The owners of this home are busy professionals in business and medicine, with two small children. They were after a calm oasis that didn't feel precious but still had a layer of glamour throughout.

What inspired your design ethos for this project?

We allowed each room to inform us. For example, the first space you enter, the formal lounge, needed to feel like arriving in a luxury hotel lobby, a clear delineation from the 'every day' into a quiet, luxurious sanctuary- complete with a grand piano and a phenomenal chandelier. Alternatively, the children's rumpus room needed to be a cosy den, enveloping with soft surfaces, warm tones and robust finishes.

Which designers and brands did STUDIO turn to for furniture, lighting and accessories?

The lighting in this project is a standout feature; we sourced some striking pieces from Italian designers Giopato&Coombes. Closer to home, Armadillo & Co., Zuster, Globewest and Arthur G were our first port of call. Individual furniture pieces, custom-designed by STUDIO, and original artwork give the home a unique feel. We also included some gorgeous Cachet by Cooper Robinson items, our in-house brand.

What were your favourite elements in/of the home?

The home itself has beautiful scale; each room feels "right". We love the 1st-floor window encasements as they create a dynamic light and offer a sense of intimacy. But, the Giopato&Coombes lighting is an absolute highlight for us! Each handcrafted piece was like adding a jewel to each room.
