PROJECT Residence Malvern M8

About Malvern M8

What was the client's brief to STUDIO?

Our client had renovated two neighbouring properties and engaged us to help her furnish the homes. She wanted minimal artwork and a very neutral palette.

How did you add interest to the spaces with such a refined brief?

Pieces like the curved sofa and dining chairs created visual impact and softened the rooms' linea structure. We added colour in the form of rugs, so it was below eye level. A monochromatic palette introduced drama and contrast, like the large black timber modern farmhouse table anchoring the family/dining area.

What was the overall feeling you were trying to create?

One of uncluttered calm and timelessness. Each piece of furniture has a reason for being there and has its own little quirks and details without vying for attention.

The two living spaces are multipurpose; what's the secret to marrying different functionalities?

The secret is treating the space as a whole from the get-go. The formal lounge doubles as an office. So the desk and coffee table are essentially the same black timber; to the eye, they are a pair, which visually ties the two ideas together.
